Value Voters Forum (5/20/2008 10:05p)
By Mike
SMLA Chair
Bob Emrich, Director of Maine Jeremiah Project, will moderate the first ever Maine Values Voter Congressional Forum on May 22 at 7 pm at the University of New England, Westbrook Campus, 716 Stevens Avenue, Portland.

First District Congressional Republican candidates Dean Scontras and Charlie Summers have agreed to participate, along with Democrat Steven Meister. Democrats Michael Brennan, Adam Cote, Mark Lawrence, Chellie Pingree and Ethan Strimling were invited but have declined. It is hoped that circumstances may change and others will choose to participate.

“We commend the candidates who have agreed to join but it is disappointing that so many have declined our invitation,” said Charla Bansley, state director of Concerned Women for America of Maine. “How can Maine voters expect these no-show candidates to take on world leaders when they’re afraid to show up and answer questions from me?” asked Bansley.

Carolyn Gilman of Maine Coalition of Concerned Families agrees it is important for candidates to speak on the issues that concern value voters: “Instead of relying upon secondary sources, we want to hear directly from the candidates, whether they agree with us or not,” Gilman said.

Other organizations cosponsoring the event include The Anglican Cathedral of St. Paul, and the Maine Right To Life Committee. “Issues often categorized as ‘social issues’ should not be ignored by those who want to represent the people of Maine in Congress. For hundreds of thousands of Maine people, these are the deciding factors when choosing among Candidates. We want to know what they believe and why they adopt the positions they hold,” said Teresa McCann-Tumidajski, Executive Director, Maine Right to Life Committee
Each of the candidates will be asked the same questions and will have opportunity to appeal to the audience for support. Questions will come from representatives of the sponsoring organizations.

People's Veto initiative on LD 2247 (The "Bottle" Tax) (5/20/2008 9:40p)
By Mike
SMLA Chair
Jack Wibby, the Exec. Director of Maine Taxpayers United (MTU) is working with a broad coalition to repeal the "Bottle Tax" which would fund Dirigo.  MTU is joining with other organizations such as the Maine Federation of Young Republicans (MYFR), STOP Taxing ME, FedUpWithTaxes.org which is a broad based coalition in itself of various industry groups, the Maine COC, Portland Regional COC and others all working towards a repeal of LD 2247.  SMLA supports any and all efforts to help repeal this tax.  Dirigo is a failure and to continue to fund it on the backs of the people is wrong.  Please sign the petition and urge others to do the same.  For more information on this important ballot initiative, or to circulate petitions visit one of the coalition websites
